About us

Empowering Camden

Co-Op Camden is a holding non-profit dedicated to incubating and organizing new cooperative enterprises in Camden, starting with a food cooperative.

Purpose & Approach

The purpose of the cooperative is to serve as a community economic development vehicle that works with residents and development stakeholders to foster food agency where youth lead a culture of health in Camden.

Our approach is inspired by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Culture of Health, emphasizing health as a core value in decision-making to build strong communities, promote healthy environments, and empower individual actions for collective well-being.

The Foundation promotes a Culture of Health by advocating for a societal shift that values health universally, ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to live their healthiest lives regardless of their circumstances.

We believe that this approach can help move Camden from the label of a “distressed city” to a flourishing “cooperative city” ultimately resulting in better economic, health, and social outcomes for residents and workers.

Strengthening Camden

Camden is a strong city, some even say invincible. By building up our youth into tomorrow’s leaders, we are working towards making Camden even stronger.

Nurturing
A Culture of Health

Changing lives starts with changing lifestyles. By building the Camden Food Coop, we’re nurturing a Culture of Health.

Addressing
Food & Nutrition Security

Creating solutions requires seeing the problems for what they are. In an effort to better form the future of food in Camden, we’re addressing not only food but Nutrition Security.

Centering
Youth Well-Being

Our children guide us into the future. For us at Co-op Camden, to look forward is to center youth well-being.

Establishing
Community Ownership

The Co-op model builds community. It is one that depends on us standing together and standing on business. It is community-owned, community-run, and community-benefiting.

Why Youth-Led?

Central to addressing the social determinants of health and challenges to health equity in the United States is the growing acknowledgment among solution seekers of the importance of cross-sector collaborators and partners. Youth are an “underutilized and overlooked” partner, especially in vulnerable urban communities, who bring diverse and fresh perspectives on and to their communities. Provided the opportunity and resources (e.g., coaching, compensation, and connections), youth can add value as partners to solve problems and achieve goals to benefit their communities.

Sponsored by The Rowan University/Rutgers-Camden Board of Governors, we seek to position the cooperative to help build a Culture of Health with youth leading the process.
